LILLY'S WORLD OF WAX AND THE DREAM FILMS!
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 7:00PM, $5
A SPECIAL SCREENING IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE EXHIBITION “THE CONEY ISLAND AMATEUR PSYCHOANALYTIC SOCIETY AND ITS CIRCLE”
Coney Island, 1926, Lillie Beatrice Santangelo opens her legendary World in Wax Musée. For fifty years she exhibits a parade of celebrities and heads of state as well as dioramas of serial killers caught in the act and the participants in famous freak births.
Coney Island's last Wax Museum was a contemporary institution that no doubt influenced the nearby members of the Amateur Psychoanalytic Society. The relationship between the two groups is well documented.
Filmed just before the museum closed Tom Palazzo’s “Lillie’s Word in Wax" is a unique behind the scenes glimpse of the legendary institution. Lillie leads the camera on a tour of the museum with the lights and wires being dragged along before the eyes of the audience. She insists on looking into the camera as she delivers her absurd and touching stories about the figures. As Lillie's helpers toast her and say how much they will miss her, she admits to us that her wax figures 'made mistakes.' But, she says, 'I don't believe there is a hell. I believe we pay for our sins here on earth.'
When the Museum was finally shuttered in the mid 1980’s, no waxwork of Freud was found, however there are tantalizing clues that a figure of “The Father of Psychoanalysis” may have existed along side the waxwork of Albert Einstein “Father of the Atomic Age”.
Artist Zoe Beloff will discuss this question and be on hand to screen nine of the Coney Island Amateur psychoanalytic Society’s “Dream Films” in their original 16mm format.
