Anatomical Venuses, The Slashed Beauty, and Fetuses Dancing a Jig: A Journey into the Curious World of the Medical Museum.

This afternoon's highly-illustrated lecture will introduce you to the the Medical Museum and its curious denizens, from the Anatomical Venus to the Slashed Beauty, the allegorical fetal skeleton tableau to the taxidermied bearded lady, the flayed horseman of the apocalypse to the three fetuses dancing a jig. The lecture will contextualize these artifacts by situating them within their historical context via a discussion of the history of medical modeling, a survey of the great artists of the genre, and an examination of the other death-related diversions which made up the cultural landscape at the time that these objects were originally created, collected, and exhibited.

Volunteer!
It's time to dust off your sea shells and wax those fins! This year's Coney Island Mermaid Parade is just around the corner on Saturday, June 19th. Without volunteers the parade couldn't stay afloat.

We rely on over 150 volunteers each year for a successful parade. Volunteer positions include registration, check-in, merchandise, crowd control, wrangling, surveys, holding signs and hustling the crowd. Volunteers will be handsomely rewarded with generous sunshine (fingers crossed!), salt air, and the much-coveted volunteer t-shirt!

We are happy to announce a new privilege for all Coney Island, USA members -- you can now use an iPhone to vote and decide who gets the People's Prize at this year's Parade. Each member will get ten votes -- which you can use to vote any Parade participant up or down. The top three vote-getters will win awards. The competition is sure to be fierce, so vote wisely and feel free to solicit bribes. It's not the same as being an official Judge on the reviewing stand, but you can get in on this action CHEAP!! You can download the app from the iTunes store right now.

Members will receive a password for voting via email closer to the parade. And if you're not a member, now is the perfect time to join!! And VOTE!!
