In addition to being a roller coaster historian and one of the founders of American Coaster Enthusiasts, Joe has been a photographer and documentarian of popular culture for many years. The Lighthouse Park Carousel in New Haven, CT, and the Big Dipper roller coaster in San Diego, CA, are two of the successful preservation projects on which he did many years of work.
Joe is also a theater technician, professor at the Institute of Design and Construction in Brooklyn, and an off-Broadway lighting designer. He has been a commentator on Connecticut Public Radio, was the first person in the US to see Sputnik, and has an MFA from Yale University. He is currently writing a book about his dog, Zonker, who was famous for riding roller coasters all over the country.
He is extremely proud to have donated the front seat car of Coney Island’s Tornado Roller Coaster to the Coney Island Museum.

extraordinary place. Come see artifacts and images from

Popular Culture.
New Exhibition - Postcards from Paradise: Writings and Images from Dreamland, Luna Park and Steeplechase Parks. Now through February 27, 2011.
Postcards from Paradise: Writings and Images from Dreamland, Luna Park and Steeplechase Parks, an exhibition of never-before seen postcards from the Coney Island Museum Collection, featuring an introduction by former first lady, Barbara Bush. For over a century, individuals have been sending each other images and text through the mail.
Postcards are the original Instant Messages, and in the early 20th century, thousands were mailed from Coney Island each day, telling stories and painting word-pictures that were carried by the US Postal Service to destinations all over the world. Curated by Martha Wilson and Aaron Beebe, this exhibition is not affiliated in any way with the government of the United States, the US Postal Service, or any other State-Sponsored organization or Agency.
