Is it landmarked?
I read on a carousel history site that they dont allow photography. Anyone know the validity of that (the people that run it dont seem terribly chatty or even aware of its history. Are they the owners or do they just operate it?

The B&B Carousell (note the double L) is NOT landmarked. The owner is Jimmy McCullough. He has people running it. I've never heard of the no picture rule...

Not landmarked.
I believe there is at least one group of people looking into the landmarking process for it, though.
It's a remarkable ride, though. From what i understand, the building is original and designed for the carousel. And you don't see many carousels with the rings any more.
Of course, as an amusement operator, these things might not be as important as they are to a historian or a nostalgia buff.
I think it's an incredibly important piece of the coney puzzle. As for pictures, i don't think they can legally prevent you from taking photos from the street.

I was in C.I. last week and rode the B&B, and took some pictures with my little digi-cam. The woman operating the ride didn't seem to notice or care. As a matter of fact, there was a woman with a professional SLR rig sitting by the brass ring gizmo, taking pictures of the carousel as I rode. I hope she didn't snap one of me!

well thats the thing...I really wanna get good close shots of the vintage artwork, etc etc. And to do that properly its a nice idea to do it with permission so I dont have to be sneaky and quick.

It wasn't that "they" didn't allow photography. That impression comes from when the late Mike Saltzstein ran the carousel, and discouraged taking pictures. He never was too comfortable around carousel buffs, and always seemed to be in a grumpy mood to many. But may he rest in peace.

But heck, we carousel buffs can still ABSOLUTELY LOVE the B&B, can't we? One of the only machines I know of that's run at a good clip, with a ring catch to boot! I would love to see it restored, though - it deserves that respect.

Hey Mike
I shot a few photos of insectavora riding it this past Summer and had no problems with anyone telling me otherwise. So you should have no problem.

The B&B Carousel came from Bertrand Island. It was traded for an Illions and $4,000.00 by my Uncle. That is all I know about it.

Hey there Johnms...
Are you the nephew of the late Joe DeLorenzo?

Hi Rapid T. Rabbit
No I am not Joe Delorenzo nephew. I worked for him from the time I was 11 till I was 25, we called his uncle Louis uncle. My grandfather knew him well as my uncle worked for him for years. Joe is not the one who trades the B&B Carousel. It was his Uncle Louis Accomando who did along with $4,000.00 for the Illions. I enjoyes many years with Joe and his wife Nellie they were great people and are truely missed.

Ah thank you that certainly fills in a lot of gaps from what I thought I knew. I do remember the late Mike Saltzstein who co-owned the B&B carousel with Jim McCullough telling the NCA conventioneers who visited in 1990 that the ride came from Lake Hopatcong NJ during the early 1930's but did not specifically mention Bertrand Island. I thought that perhaps it was at some other park or picnic grove on the lake, I had seen a postcard depicting another carousel over at nearby Budd Lake.
So did the Carmel carousel (which eventually became the B&B) that Bishop traded for with Uncle Louis ever turn in this building at Bertrand Island?
Yes Joe and Nellie were dear friends of mine, may they rest in peace, and I got to know and visit them at the lake during the mid-1970's. Here is a picture of me riding their Allan Herschell (metal) carousel which replaced the Illions Supreme in that pavillion above that they sold to Circus World.
I loved the collection of memorabilia Joe displayed around that pavillion. Joe eventually gave me the Mattel Blaze rocking horse in the picture on the left and I still have it. What always fascinated me was that Illions-carved horse you see in both lower pictures that was appearantly
not
from any carousel. Joe said it was once part of a small Steeplechase-type ride that ran beneath the old Wildcat roller coaster at Bertrand Island. Wish I could find out more about that ride.
Here's a picture of that Illions Supreme carousel that traded places with the Carmel that became the B&B, as it appeared down in Circus World FL during the mid-1970's. As you can see in this current ad, the frame still exists and and the owner is seeking to repopulate the carousel as a functioning Illions carousel again.
