John Dorman's Philips Candy is in a storefront at 8 Barrett Ave (off Forest Ave) on Staten Island.

Any idea if they're gonna move back to the terminal now that renovations are complete?

Not that I'm aware of. Last time I saw John was the night before the Coney Island USA Benefit in March and he told me he was doing well with local Staten Island catering. He still gets a lot of people from Brooklyn driving over the bridge and lots of ex Brooklynites now living on Staten Island.

While we're talkiung about Philips...

I'm looking for old photos of the store and the station.  I talked to John, and he's looking, but he's a busy man.
I'm hoping to get a panel up in the museum in the next week or so about Philips, but i'm lacking in photographic materials...

anyone?

I'll have to look around, but I may have some photos of the old signage (those wooden, hand-painted candy ads that were nailed to the left side), but they're recent - about 1998.  Not professionally done by any means, but let me know if you're interested at all.

I have a few on my site.  Including a few pics of some vintage signage in the terminal just before they shut it down. Aaron, if you want hi-res versions for printing out, contact me directly.

Here are some of "Pete's Best":

damn, I envy the hell out of you folks that were down there shooting when a lot of this stuff was still there.  I wish the hell Id gotten involved in the Coney scene sooner. Undecided
Thing is I was down there as early as 97 participating in the Community Mayors of NYState events at Astroland with handicapped kids.  I musta been totally blind to the good stuff that was down there.

Aaron, I'll look around for the photos I have - I will have to scan them in and email to you, as I didn't take them on a digital camera.  I'll get them to you once I find them - glad to share.

Oh, and Jack - great photos - I love that one of John Dorman, it really brings back the good old days...

Don't be too hard on yourself.  I grew up at the corner of Brighton Beach and Coney Island Avenue and back when I started to take photos of the area on my own--back in 1985 and such--friends and others really barely understood why I was taking pictures. And at times I passed up opportunities as a kid to photograph cool neighborhood stuff because I just didn't get it myself. Now they all appreciate it because the place has changed, but the uniqe memories still remain.

The big lesson I learned from that--and other photo excursions--is that for the most part people don't fully appreciate the work that a photographer does when an event is happening. Some people are so wrapped up in the moment they don't realize that documenting things you care about--and not just the obvious family and friends--is important.  It's only years later people will care.

Also, in general I think there has got to be a treasure-trove of pre-Internet photographers with boxes and boxes of this stuff sitting in their closets in Luna Park, Warbass, Trump and Brighton.  But they don't realize what they have.
