Feb 17th, 2008, 2:59pm

as it was for years:

photographed today:

I took a good look at the paint job, it was painted over, can barely make out the letters.

They had one of a door opened later.  Inside was painted over too.  Also, if memory serves me, there was a pit in the middle, but floor is level now, they added plywood it looked like.

You mean Popeye is gone, too? That's lame!

Painting over that stuff is a crime. The exterior sign dated from Luna Park days, didn't it?

I think that New York Dave is correct that the B&B Carousell sign was from the days of Luna Park. Now it is another piece of old Coney Island that is simply memory. I'm not sure whether "Popeye" was simply painted on the wall or it was a plaque. Something suggests to me that it was a plaque, but I couldn't be positive.

Absolutely Horrible

Can something be done? They could of sold it, or donated it.

What a horrible shortcut.

sadly... we all probably knew this was going to happen.

The B&B sign was painted on metal, and permantly attached to the brick behind it with nails.  To remove the sign, would have damaged the brick.

One question I have, if the sign on the roof is saying it is still available, nothing is happening, no one is moving in, why was the sign painted now??

I'm sure that the sign was painted to make the space look more "desirable" as opposed to derilict, which is how it looked before.

They were asking $14,000 a month rent for the space...it would be interesting to see if they dropped the asking rent.

Who is the landlord?  Has it been the same since this carousel arrived from Bertrand Island NJ in the 1930's?

Let's hope another furniture store doesn't pop up there.  I still remember when there used to be a dark ride next door to B&B.  But it was non-enforcement of even the current C-7 zoning on that block that  resulted in the isolation of the carousel and it's lack of business in recent decades.

I believe that the auto rental place is now out and the furniture stores are on borrowed time, so I am hopeful that noting contrary to zoning goes in there at this point.

Hey, I know those "youngish russian guys" and I am sure they would not mind restoring the sign to it's original condition if anyone is interested in purchasing it. How much do you think it is worth?

Anything that happened to that sign now would be categorized as "recreation" and not "restoration".

In it's previous condition, the sign was paint flaking off sheetmetal that could have been retouched, which would at least have had a historical component.  I don't believe that they could take the paint off and uncover the old sign because of the way it was degrading.

Unless someone wants to correct me (Dick?)  I would say that any historic value that it once had has been compromised and that the value is now $0.

Since it's a $0, I guess they can put a double coating on that fresh paint and make it glossy.
