I think this is a good idea.  It's imperative that people recognize that, whatever happens to Astroland, Coney Island is still here and still needs to be fought for.

the moment after I woke up and thought oh, no it's here the last day of Astroland, I started crying.  I'm sure there'll be a lot of tears--and a lot of smiles and laughter too-- before the lights go out for the final time in Astroland.  It's so sad, and so unnecessary, when nothing can be built on the property for years.  

When you come to Coney Island today, please help the Save Coney Island grassroots movement grow by picking up a bunch of flyers and handing them out!  The main thing you need to tell people is to write, email or phone Mayor Bloomberg, Christine Quinn and Domenic Recchia to preserve the Amusement zone!   If you can't be here, email or PM for flyer pickup or print them out yourself from the jpeg.

I believe the premature closing of Astroland is going to backfire on Thor, just as the eviction of the go karts and batting cages did.  The opposition to Thor Equities deliberate blighting  of the area is going to grow and make it impossible for them to get their zoning.

Astroland will live forever in our hearts! And in many wonderful photographs and films. Just like Luna, Dreamland and Steeplechase. Oh no, now I'm crying again

A big hug to everyone who helped hand out the flyers! It was a very successful  and heartening grassroots effort.  It was an amazing day--we gave out just about all of the 10,000 flyers!  I discovered this around 6pm when I filled my tote bag for the last time at the sideshow, there was only a couple 100 left in the box.  All of the boxes at other distribution points were...empty!  

Several members of this board including a few whom I met for the first time as well as some self-described "lurkers" showed up.  It was great to meet everyone.  Two of us were comparing notes at day's end marveled at how there weren't any flyers littering the ground.  We saw only about 5 on the ground which means people did put the postcard size flyers in their pocket and take home..  

Other observations: Majority of people said thank you and asked questions about the situation. So I had many conversations with families and individuals. My throat was worn out by day's end. Quite a few people asked for a few flyers to distribute themselves on the Boardwalk, to their friends, or at their job.  I also had people running after me for a flyer or reaching their hands out.  They had heard me say "Save Coney Island."  My conversations with some of these individuals will always be a part of my memory of the last day of Astroland.
