Observer: Coney Rezoning Officially Launches 1/20
Jan 19th, 2009, 3:23pm

The City Planning Review Session is on Tuesday at 1pm, when just about everybody's attention will be on the Inauguration...Now that's strategic planning!

http://www.observer.com/mobile/article/81356

The article says the city just sent out this statement from Mayor Bloomberg:

Last week in the State of the City speech, I discussed the importance of moving ahead with development plans that create the conditions for growth in places of opportunity like Coney Island. The start of the public process is an important step forward. The plan to revitalize to Coney Island will substantially increase the storied amusement area, creating a year-round attraction that will bring tourists and visitors to Brooklyn. And as we enhance that historic asset, we will also pave the way to the north and west for the development of more than 4,500 housing units and the creation of thousands of permanent and construction jobs. This plan protects and preserves the unique character of Coney Island while bringing new housing, shops and recreational facilities to a community that needs more of each.

Does anybody know-- is the public allowed into Review Sessions for the NYC department of planning?
There is a public meeting on Wed as well, though the agenda has nothing about Coney listed.
Any ideas?

yes, the public may observe.  Just a few minutes ago I received an email from the Save Coney Island group list  that says:

Attend the Zoning Certification Tomorrow!!
Bust out your signs and make a visual statement at the meeting!!

City Planning Commission Review Session:

WHEN:
Tuesday, January 20th, 2009, 1:00 PM

WHERE:
in Spector Hall
22 Reade Street, New York, NY

On Tuesday, January 20th at 1:00 PM, the City will make a formal presentation of its zoning plan before the City Planning Commission. This is the formal beginning of the public review process which will alter the zoning of the Coney Island Amusement District. This process will determine wether Coney Island remains an Amusement Park or if it will become another shopping mall filled with retail, high rise buildings and hotels. This presentation is open to the public. We need Coney Island lovers to show up to this meeting with "save coney island" signs (which you can download at the link below) to make our presence felt. We want to put the City on notice that people are paying attention, and that we won't let their plan be pushed through the zoning process without opposition. The Coney Island rezoning is the first item on the agenda and it should not take more than 30 minutes. Please note that this is not a protest. If we are too disruptive, we will be thrown out.

The calendar is subject to change, so make sure to confirm here (http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/ luproc/calbeg.shtml) on the morning of the 20th.

Volunteer for our Lobby Day!
Coming soon to the City Council Member in your District!!
We will be holding a lobbying day within the next few weeks
. A lobbying day is when we assemble many Save Coney Island groups to meet with each Council Member. Save Coney Island Volunteers from every City Council District will make our case to them and ask for their support. We will meet with councilmembers in groups of two or three, depending on how many people we have. In anticipation of that day, we will hold a preparatory meeting to go over the main points we want to hit and what we want to accomplish on our lobbying day. We need a few volunteers to help us schedule the meetings, and we need as many volunteers at we can get to participate in the lobbying day! We've already receive a tremendous amount of volunteers but we still need more! Please email Save.Coney@gmail.com if you are willing to meet with your City Council Member and help us stop the destruction of Coney Island!!

Upcoming Demonstration!
Save The People's Playground-
Create a World Class Amusement Destination

We will also be holding a Demonstration at City Hall within the next few weeks. It will likely be right after our lobbying day and conclude with a parade over to Council Member Dominic Recchia's office. For that, we will need volunteers to make posters, collect signatures, and most importantly of all, we will need as many people as possible come and make some noise!!!
