An email received over the weekend from Save Coney Island says:

WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND:
Save Coney Island encourages all Coney Island Lovers to attend this Community Board Hearing or submit your written testimony (address below) to convince the Community Board to oppose the City's inadequate plan.

The Community Board hearing is an important event in the rezoning process because the City places a lot of importance on the vote of the Community Board. The City has presented their plan for the rezoning of Coney Island (to review this plan Click Here). This rezoning will determine how Coney Island is redeveloped. Save Coney Island is opposed to the proposed plan because it:

1) Reduces the area reserved for amusements to a narrow 9-acre strip. "We are concerned that the proposed area set aside for open-air amusements is of insufficient size and that as a result this revitalization effort will not be successful," the Municipal Art Society warned. A New York Times editorial called it "an area that is simply too small to attract enough rides and attractions to bring back the big crowds."

2) Allows high-rise towers of up to 30 stories in the core amusement district. The N.Y. Times editorial warned: "The hotels could too easily become a wall, blocking public access to the sideshows and the rides, the boardwalk and the ocean. The hotels also squeeze the outdoor rides into a narrow strip"

3) Tempts developers to tear down historic Coney Island landmarks. The lots containing Nathan's and other historic structures along Surf Avenue would be rezoned to allow for high-rise towers.

4) Clears the way for chain retail and other generic commercial uses. Allowing large formula restaurants and chain retail establishments into the amusement district's core would take land away from amusement uses and erode Coney Island's unique character.

The ULURP (to learn more about ULURP process--http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/coney_island/index.shtml) process to instill this inadequate plan is under way. The 2nd step in the process is the Community Board Hearing. Please attend this meeting and urge the Community Board to:

1) Expand the acreage allotted to outdoor amusements. Nine acres is not enough. Land that is not specifically zoned for amusements will be lost to amusements forever.

2) Keep high-rise towers out of Coney East. Hotel towers and other high rises belong north of Surf Avenue and west of Keyspan Park, not in the heart of the amusement district.

3) Provide safeguards against the displacement of small businesses and local entrepreneurs by chain operations. The rezoning should include a greater mix of maximum footprints to encourage a more diverse and desirable mix of businesses, and it should incorporate formula business restrictions (http://www.newrules.org/retail/formula.html).

If you would like to speak at the hearing please call Community Board 13 at 718-266-3003 to reserve your time to speak. Speakers are allowed 2-3 minutes to give their testimony.

You can also submit your written testimony by writing a letter to:

just got back from the meeting.  The best highlight of the meeting has to be when Sitt's mouthpiece tried to talk and the microphone stopped working.  Someone from the audience said what everyone was thinking, that even God hates Sitt and what he is doing here.

The meeting went on till 1030pm. There were a number of standout speeches including Juan Rivero of Save Coney, Fred Kahl of CIUSA, Stewart Pertz of MAS, David Finkelstein of ACE and of course Dick Zigun of CIUSA and Charles Denson of CIHP. Also our "Thunderbolt Kin."  There were 90 people who signed up to speak, including many good speakers whom I don't know.

Will be interesting to see what the press's take on it will be.  NY1 stayed till the very end, interviewing people in the lobby.

I could not even hear what Masyr was saying when the mike worked. I was up front on the other side waiting my turn.  Ironically up in front it was very hard to hear,  must be the sound system

look forward to watching it, Bruce.  there were two people with video cameras covering all the speeches, but they are both doing documentaries so we won't see them anytime soon.  Pablo from this board was there taking photos, so we can look forward to seeing his slide show soon!

here's a post from amNY that was just now emailed to me:

Once again, the press dilutes, blurs and confuses the acreage issue.

This meeting proved what I have said all along, the locals think they are owed something instead of getting off their lazy asses and Lola Staar as I have said all along is not anyone to be heading up something called Save Coney Island. This is now two times in a row at Lincoln that her name has been called and she is a no show. Like I've said all along she's an opportunist and a joke. I guess she was out being fabulous.

Coney’s future collides with current realities at hearing
BY MIKE MCLAUGHLIN
The Brooklyn Paper

Mayor Bloomberg’s proposal to reshape Coney Island’s ramshackle “People’s Playground” with rides, attractions, hotels and thousands of apartments collided with scores of critics in the first public hearing of the controversial plan on Tuesday night.

Residents, merchants, amusement enthusiasts and good ol’ Coney freaks crammed the Lincoln HS auditorium on Ocean Parkway to denounce — and, in fewer cases, endorse — Bloomberg’s vision, which includes creating a city-owned theme park bordered by privately built hotels and year-round attractions like bowling alleys and movie theaters in the area between Keyspan Park and the Cyclone roller coaster.

“This plan was significantly watered down and the interests of the amusement industry were betrayed,” argued Dick Zigun, the founder of the Coney Island Circus Sideshow.

Zigun supported the city’s initial proposal for a 15-acre amusement park, but that plan became bogged down in a dispute between Bloomberg and neighborhood’s principal landowner Joe Sitt, who did not want to sell his beachfront property to the city for the new amusement park.

To break the impasse, the city decreased the area for outdoor rides to nine acres and enlarged the zone for private developers.

In response, Zigun resigned from the Coney Island Development Corporation in protest last year.

But other carnies lauded the city’s attempt to attract investment in the sand-swept pleasure zone, home to many empty lots by loosening the definition of amusement zoning to allow more attractions besides rides.

“The plan is a step, if not a leap, in the right direction,” said Dennis Vourdaris, the owner of Deno’s Wonder Wheel, the only remaining theme park in Coney Island since Astroland closed last year. The owner of Nathan’s Famous hot dog stand, a historic site at the corner of Surf and Stillwell avenues, also expressed his support in a statement read by his spokesman, George Shea.

Pessimistic observers, who have seen other Coney revitalization projects come and go through the decades, said this plan to restore the faded playground’s past glory won’t get off the ground either.

“The pie-in-the-sky promises of the current rezoning are all too familiar,” said Charlie Denson, who wrote the seminal local history book “Coney Island Lost and Found.”

A core battle has been over what variety of rides, attractions and hotels would be permitted, but for many Coney Island residents this is a fight to improve their neighborhood which is beset with high crime rates, poverty and limited employment opportunities.

“I’m for the redevelopment of Coney Island — but [fix] the west end first!” an area resident, Ken Jones, said to applause.

Many other Coney denizens said the city’s plan neglected their hardscrabble corner of the neighborhood, while others supported the Bloomberg plan, because of the prospect of construction jobs and later, permanent employment from the rides, hotels and retail outlets that crop up.
