subway is always the quickest route to get there.
The D and F are the most reliable and quickest lines but you should check  out the MTA website for any construction - if you're timing works out, you might get to see the Mermaid Parade (6/19)

You can take the express bus from manhattan. Its the x28 or x38 and it runs alng 5th avenue.. It starts on west 57th street and Madison Ave and then heads down 5th avenue. The cost is $5.50

X38 only during evening rush hour.  X28 weekend service may be eliminated by this Summer if this next round of MTA service cuts goes through.

I come in from out of town via Amtrak to Manhattan and find it quite easy to find one of these subway trains. Just though I would give a out-of-towner point of view. I also have found, even though they a reputation to keep, most New Yorkers are pretty friendly just use your head!

I know Providence RI is not really as far as England, but from some points of view it may be. Coney is another world and I love it! I hope to see you there!

(I have also discovered don't bother asking a stranger on the street in Time Square directions, you will most likely be asking another tourist!)

Four trains run to Stillwell, The D, F, Q, and N.  The B only runs to Brighton Beach and does not run on weekends.  Q and N are the fastest but not by much.

D and F run on 6th Ave in Manhattan at 42, 34th streets.

Q and N run on Broadway in Manhattan.

F train is the most scenic subway ride.  The F train rides high above Brooklyn, at one point I believe it is the highest point in the subway system.  You can get good photos of Brooklyn from high above.  F and D exit Manhattan underground, in a tunnel under the river to Brooklyn.

The Q and N exit Manhattan over the Manhattan bridge giving you a good photo op of Manhattan, and the Brooklyn Bridge.  But they travel through Brooklyn in a cut out, not elevated like the F and D.

If I were you I'd take the F to Coney and on the way back take the N or Q to get a nice view of Manhattan.

The F/G trains Smith/9 street stop is the highest station in the system because it goes across the Gowanus Canal, and when the route was built, maritime rules said any bridge built over active waterways, either must open to allow tall masted ships, or built high enough to allow same ships to pass

This station also gives you a nice view of Manhattan.

The D train uses the Manhattan bridge along with the N and Q.  Only the F train exits Manhattan via tunnel.

The D goes underground after the Manhattan Bridge and then becomes an elevated line from 9th Avenue in Brooklyn right to Coney Island.
