Where were King and Queen?
Jun 23rd, 2010, 5:36am

I was at the Staging Area on W 21 St. Saturday and never saw the floats for the King and Queen. I looked everywhere but never saw Lou Reed. Were their floats elsewhere? In past years, they always appeared for photographers before the parade. What happened? This is the first time I ever missed seeing the King and Queen. Except for that, I had a great time.

The guy who sat next to me in the Judges' area was saying that in past years, the King (and presumably the Queen) got up out of the float and I guess came over to the Judges' area or something, and he was shocked that Lou Reed didn't. We assumed that for age and medical reasons, he actually couldn't, but we're just guessing. Maybe that's why there was less interaction and chance to see them this year than usual.

They were pretty close to the beginning of the parade. I was surprised to see them so early on myself, but did manage to get a couple of shots of them.

Last year, Harvey Keitel's float was at the Staging Area before entering Surf Ave. so all the photographers could see him. This year, they evidently moved the King and Queen float directly on Surf Ave depriving those in the Staging Area of seeing Lou Reed and his Queen.

I'm sure they moved the King and Queen (and Sandy the Seagull) just so you would miss them, Myron. The powers that be saw the good weather forecast and knew that you wouldn't be able to complain about the weather being bad because the Parade wasn't held on the first Saturday of Summer.

I mean, honestly. Stop knocking the parade. Lou (and Laurie) are ROCK STARS. I'm guessing that they dictated where/what they would do in the parade. They aren't pets on display. Be a judge next year -- you'll see everything.

I wasn't knocking the Parade but simply asking why they moved the floats away from the Staging Area for the first time. I was upset as I missed seeing the King and Queen for the first time. If you bothered to see my other posts, you would read how I praised the way it was organized, how great the day was, how everybody had a great time and how courteous everybody was. As for being a judge, I was over at the Staging Area on W. 21 St. There was no way I could manage to get-over to the Judging Area at 2 PM. I can't be in 2 places at the same time so I missed the motorized floats.

What little I saw of Lou Reed, he looked like he wanted to be anywhere but the parade.

The lovely Ms. Laurie Anderson looked like she was having a great time, though!

Was Lou Reed brought down to the water for the annual ceremony? It was so crowded on the boardwalk I wasn't able to see.

Yes he was.

Every year when the parade ends we announce the winners in all categories. Then Dick and the King and Queen speak and the procession makes it's way up 10 st to the beach. This is in our frequently asked questions page.

Lou and Laurie were both on the reviewing stand with a bunch of their friends and family. Both spoke after the parade with Lou specifically talking about being born in Coney Island.

Big thanks to both artists.
