JAMES RILEY - William Burroughs and the magical objectivity of the tape recorder

James Riley considers the status of the tape recorder as a magical object in the creative praxis of William Burroughs. Taking as a starting point the infamous instance of his attempt to 'curse' the London Moka bar in 1972, this discussion will look at the manner in which Burroughs simultaneously used the instrument as a practical device, a compositional tool and literary motif. Selections from Burroughs recordings will also be played.

James Riley is a writer and lecturer. He is Fellow and Director of Studies in English Literature at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. He blogs at http://residual-noise.blogspot.co.uk/
