Open Call Application
Funhouse Philosophers, the resident theater program at Coney Island USA (CIUSA), is soliciting proposals for a new work to be staged at our landmark building on Surf Avenue in March of 2017. This is a rapid development and production process, and preference will be given to a project that is poised to take advantage of this accelerated timeline.
The selected project will be provided with:
- The use of the CIUSA facility, including lighting and sound equipment for rehearsal and performance
- A 2 to 3 weekend performance run (up to 15 performances) depending upon the needs of the production
- The production support of the CIUSA staff and board
- A $2,500 stipend, part of which must be used to pay performers
While we are open to performance works of any variety or form, we are looking for a new work that aligns with the organization’s philosophy and aesthetic. Please continue reading about the organization and the program below.
To submit a project for consideration, please fill out the online application.
We will contact finalists for further details and possibly a work sample.

About Coney Island USA
Coney Island USA runs a multi-arts center in Coney Island, Brooklyn, presenting innovative performances and exhibitions that preserve and expand the traditions that make the place unique.
We believe that 19th century American popular culture spawned a democratic cultural golden age, unique to our history and indispensable to our future. This new age gave the world a host of new forms of performing and visual arts that emerged from the populist masses - and Coney Island was the birthplace of many of them. We seek to create a forum for culture rooted in and experimenting with the traditions of Vaudeville, Dime Museums, Burlesque, Circus Sideshow, and Coney Island itself.
Coney Island USA achieves its mission through an array of programs, including large-scale cultural pageants like the Mermaid Parade; unique traditional Coney Island theatrical forms like Sideshows by the Sea Shore; historical preservation and education efforts via the Coney Island Museum; and the development of new performance works through Fun House Philosophers.
