Not your mother's book club, the Bushwick Book Club is a literature-inspired performance series and podcast that invites local songwriters and artists to plumb the depths of a chosen literary gem to create that rare and beautiful thing – a new song (or sideshow act, burlesque performance, dance, film or snack). Enjoy this evening of new performances inspired by the book WHEN THE TIDES HELD THE MOON by Venessa Vida Kelley. This queer-historical-romance-fantasy novel is set in 1910s New York and tells the story of a Puerto Rican blacksmith who falls in love with a Merman captured for a Coney Island sideshow. The author will be in attendance to give a reading and to enjoy the new songs, dance and performances inspired by their words.
